Santa Cruz Proposed Ordinance

The following information was emailed to our members in the Santa Cruz area on September 9, 2016:

The Santa Cruz City Council is in the final stage of considering a city ordinance that would, among other things, require that all massage therapists practicing in the city of Santa Cruz be certified by the California Massage Therapy Council (CAMTC). Only those MT's who have practiced in the city continuously for the past 10 years would be able to apply for an exemption to the CAMTC certification requirement. CAMTC certification requires 500 hours of approved massage education plus passage of a national massage exam.

Click here to read the proposed ordinance. ABMP has submitted formal written objections to the proposed ordinance which you can read here, and we intend to send a second letter to the City Council and Mayor Mathews prior to the meeting.

The City Council will be considering the proposed ordinance at its public meeting on Tuesday September 13, 2016 at 809 Center Street, Santa Cruz CA 95060. Click here for the meeting agenda (see item #11). The meeting begins at 2:30 pm; however, the Council will address ten other agenda items before the massage therapy agenda item.

This ordinance will affect all MT's in Santa Cruz; please attend the September 13 public meeting if you can to voice your opinion!  If you can't attend in person, you can call or write the City Council before 5:00 pm on Monday, September 12 at email: citycouncil@cityofsantacruz.com or phone: (831) 420-5020. All written communications to the City Council are public record.
