Maryland Senate Bill 554 Becomes Law

In March we wrote to you regarding Senate Bill 554, which granted power to county-level government entities allowing them to create massage establishment licensure requirements. Currently, Maryland does not require massage businesses to be registered and licensed statewide. The current law allows some counties to have establishment licensing. This bill opens that up to all counties. The Maryland Board of Massage Therapy is proposing a statewide establishment licensing bill during the next legislative session. We continue to meet with board members and have conversations regarding their need for establishment licensing and our member's needs. This is a fluid situation.

Governor Lawrence J. Hogan Jr. signed the bill into law making it effective July 1, 2019. At this time there is no action you need to take to comply with the law. We recommend that you contact local governments regarding local massage therapy business regulations.
