Effective immediately, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) will issue all massage therapy license applicants a notice regarding their eligibility to sit for the Texas Massage Therapy Exam once TDLR has:
- Received a massage therapy license application
- Verified 500 hours of massage therapy education have been completed
Applicants will receive an eligibility email from PSI—TDLR’s third-party exam vendor—for the Texas Massage Therapy Examination. This exam was developed by TDLR but will be administered by PSI and will be the default examination for license applicants. The email from PSI will include instructions explaining how to register for the Texas Massage Therapy Exam.
The MBLEx Is Still an Option
Although the Texas Massage Therapy Exam is the default exam, applicants can still choose to take the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx) administered by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB). If an applicant chooses to take the MBLEx, they will need to contact FSMTB directly for exam information and registration.
Jurisprudence Exam
Applicants who take the Texas Massage Therapy Exam will not be required to sit for the Texas jurisprudence exam because the Law and Rules topic is included in the exam. Applicants who take the MBLEx will be required to complete the jurisprudence exam.
License Reciprocity
As a reminder to schools, instructors, and students, the Texas Massage Therapy Examination is only recognized in Texas. If a student chooses to take the Texas Massage Therapy Examination and later decides to move to another state, they may need to retest to receive a license in that jurisdiction.
