2016 IMTRC Keynote Speakers Announced

The 2016 International Massage Therapy Research Conference, to be held May 12–15 in Seattle, will feature the following keynote speakers, each speaking on a different day:

  • Wayne B. Jonas, MD (Friday, May 13): Dr. Jonas is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Samueli Institute, a non-profit medical research organization supporting the scientific investigation of healing processes and their application in health and disease. He currently serves on the editorial boards of eight peer-reviewed journals and on the advisory or scientific boards of six national and international organizations.
  • Brent A. Bauer, MD (Saturday, May 14): Dr. Bauer is board-certified in Internal Medicine, a Professor of Medicine and has been on staff at Mayo Clinic for 23 years. His main research interest has been the scientific evaluation of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) therapies that patients and consumers are using with increasing frequency. 
  • Jo Smith, PhD (Sunday, May 15): Dr. Smith is a leading massage therapy educator and researcher at the Southern Institute of Technology (SIT), in Invercargill, New Zealand. Smith also co-leads the New Zealand Massage Therapy Research Centre and is focused on developing a culture of massage therapy research, within the BTSM, New Zealand, and globally.

Ohio Adopts Interstate Massage Compact

The Ohio legislature adopted Senate Bill 56 on June 21, becoming the second state to enact the Interstate Massage Compact. Massage therapists will soon be able to obtain a multistate license that will reduce holdups and delays that often occur when moving to a different state.

US Department of Education 150% Rule Update

A federal judge has granted a preliminary injunction that halts the enforcement of the US Department of Education’s new Bare Minimum Rule, also known as the “100% rule,” until the court takes further action. This is the first step in what could be a lengthy battle to ultimately delay enforcement of the rule, providing schools more time to adjust their programmatic standards, or overturn the rule altogether. Colorado Bill Requires Local Background Checks

Governor Jared Polis signed into law House Bill 24-1371, requiring local government (counties, cities, or municipalities) to conduct periodic criminal background checks for massage establishment operators, owners, and employees.
