Update February 13, 2017: ABMP is seeing a resurgence in members reporting a scam involving a request for massage. We have updated the examples below with the most recent examples we have received.
Please note! ABMP has received many reports of this scam. Please be vigilant and savvy, especially if someone asks for a “favor” in which they overpay you on a credit card and ask you to return cash. In the most common version of this scam, an out-of-town "client" contacts a practitioner via email wanting to schedule appointments for a time in the future when he/she will be visiting the area. The appointments and times are scheduled. Shortly thereafter, the practitioner receives a cashier's check for these services, but it's generally for much more than the originally agreed upon price. The alleged client or their "secretary" contacts the therapist, explains the mistake, and asks the therapist to deposit the check and simply refund the balance. The check appears to clear and the practitioner sends the extra money back to the client, only to learn two weeks later that the check was a fraud. If this has happened to you, visit the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) website, www.consumer.ftc.gov/, and click "File a Complaint" to fill out the form. You can also forward the offending emails to spam@uce.gov. In addition you can file a complaint at the Internet Crime Complaint Center's website, http://www.ic3.gov/. When I googled "want to do Massage for my Dancers”, two messages came up WITH THE EXACT SAME WORDING that had been posted via Yelp three months ago to two California massage places, except it was from "Kenneth Charles” from a Yelp address of “Kenneth C”.
Received 2/10/2017:
I am a CMT in California, and I am writing to report a scam. I received a text this morning from a Google number, 202-709-3215 (the other number shows up as 651-560-8084). The text reads:
"Hello how are you doing today? my name is James Raymond I want to know if you do deep tissue or Swedish massage and accept credit card as payment?"
I then relied that I do both modalities and that I accept credit cards using Square.
His reply: "Ok good, We are construction company, we just finished a contract and all my co workers need deep tissue massage before we commence another project..So how much is deep tissue massage for per person in an hour?"
At this point, I was starting to get a weird feeling because of the awkward prepositional phrases in the last sentence. I replied with my price and told him that I had no availability until a month out on 3/3 because I was a private practice, that maybe he should go to a larger place with multiple practitioners.
His reply: "Yes Fine I have a driver that will drive my co-workers to your office one after the other, I want deep tissue massage for 5 people on the 03/8th and 5 people on 03/9th means 5 people per day for an 1hr each person so how much is the total cost altogether?"
I simply told him at this point that I cannot accommodate that many clients i a day and that I do not even work those days. I also said that I will be out of town in March and that he will have to go to a larger place. I then blocked his number from my phone.
I appreciate you guys' website warning us about scams. The text totally matches the second one listed about a construction company, and it is really disconcerting that these scams still continue to plague us. I just wanted to report mine to continue to raise awareness among fellow massage therapists about these scammers.
Received 4/27/2016:
My business was just contacted via text message by what I believe is a scam.
They started with a full name introduction. 'Mary Lawrence'. She wanted to know if I do body massage, the cost and if I accept credit cards. When I confirmed that I did, she wanted to schedule 7 women (her workers) for the end of May.
Then it got strange. She repeatedly said she was in the hospital and couldn't speak to me personally. She then told me that the driver for her women didn't accept credit cards and she wanted me to add that into my fee and for me to pay the driver directly, $1850. That's when I realized something was fishy. She then confirmed my suspicions by offering me a $200 tip for my 'little favor'. (I only charge $30 for the first massage. So for 7 massages it would be $210.)
I know there was a similar scam going around and just wanted to spread the word. I hope this reaches the right person.

I want to report this scam that has targeted me in the past week:
I received text messages from 2 different numbers asking for "deep tissue" massage. I quickly realized that the responses were boilerplate and designed to set someone up for some kind of scam. Be on the lookout.
Here are the numbers the messages came from: 631-480-8007 and 347-667-6170
And here are the text messages I received:
Message 1: "Hello This is Jessica Robert ,I want know if you do deep tissue massage and accept credit card as form of payment?"
(The second time they contacted me had a different name pasted in, but was otherwise exactly the same message, right down to the missing space after the comma.)
Message 2: (received in both cases after I responding saying deep tissue is not my area of expertise) "Ok good,We are construction company ,we just finished a contract and all my co workers need deep tissue massage before we commence another project...So how much is deep tissue massage for per person in an hour?"
Both numbers came up as mobile numbers from the New York area when I looked them up. The second is definitely connected with some kind of telemarketing thing. Not much info on the first. I have blocked both.
Email message: Hello, That would be fine, and i want you to work on 5 people on the 6th and the remain on the 7th. I will give you $100 tip and please do a great message work for me and you will be working for me more in the future and i want you to render me a little favor. The favor is that i will like you to add $950 to the $790.00 and you will charge everything my my credit card and you will help me to send the $950 to the driver that will be bringing the people to you, i could have pay the driver myself but he's not available to accept credit card and i'm only with my credit card for now.
Email message: Hello, Thanks for getting back to me. I want you to do 1 hour per person and I have 10 people so how much will you charge per person and the grand total cost for everybody and do you accept payment with credit card and can you do the 10 people in 2 days? I have a driver that will bring the people to your office, I want table or chair massage for 10 people on the 5h and 6th of September and how much do you charge per person for an hour? Please get back to me asap so we can finalize everything.
Email message: Hello this is Anita, I want you to work for my co workers, we are construction company, we just finished a contract and all my co workers need body massage before we commence another project, so can you do that?
A member's account of the same scam via text message: A person texted me requesting massage for 8 people who were going to “be in my area.” A driver would bring them in pairs, he would pay in advance, so on and so on. Then he hit me with the following: “I am presently receiving my hearing treatment at the hospital and am going to have surgery soon and the driver don't have access to the credit card facilities so I will like you to include extra $500 plus the 25% of the service so that you can have all the charges on my credit card and you will have $400 extra send to the driver via Western Union to the drive and a $50 tip for your shop and $50 for the western union fee.” No response once I called him out. I did report it to the FTC – hard to say if the phone number or email are legit.
Email message: Hello, We are looking to book 60 minute in-office massage for 6 people ,they will come in on different days/times between October 10th through October 24th. My clients will arrive from Hong Kong prior to the booking date for Vacation. Based on your availability, give us attendance times and dates at your convenience. I look forward to your quotes, then we can make payment.
Hi, My name is Mr Steel and my wife name is Sonia Steel, we will like to have a family therapy with you. We are Belgian, presently living and working as a foreign investor here in Mexico for the past 5 years. so our annual vacation is near and we have decided to have a family Massage therapy while on vacation to enhance our health, Relaxation and well-being., that's why we're contacting you because we are coming for our vacation in your city in USA. I am a massage therapist in Baltimore, Maryland with over five years in practice. I received an unsolicited email July 9, 2013, requesting massage therapy services for someone coming into my area from out of state/country. This person insisted on setting up a payment in advance for four sessions (extremely unusual to do) and said I would receive a check from an intermediary. I replied that I asked for cash from new clients and preferred it at each session rather than all at once in case plans changed. Then, oops, the check was made out for a larger amount and I would need to deduct my fee plus $100 and then be told later what to do with the remainder. A check did show up at the Wellness Center July 30, 2013 for $2500.00 when my actual charges would have been only $300.00. the check was drawn on JP Morgan Chase Bank from the account for the Gym Store, a legitimate Brooklyn, NY business selling new and used fitness equipment. The correspondence from this potential client was suspect in that the story kept changing slightly, that she ignored the health screen I sent her, that she insisted on this convoluted payment scheme, etc. Obviously, the intent was to get me to cash the check and then write one to her for the "overage" when in reality, the check would not have been good and/or was fraudulently used on a business account that had nothing to do with me. I reported this to the consumer protection division of the state's attorney office, which suggested that, in addition to alerting everyone, I file a complaint at Ic3.gov. This is a program partly under the aegis of the FBI which deals with cybercrime. I also reported it to the New York attorney general's cybercrime office since the business the check came from is in their state. I subsequently discovered that one of the other massage therapists in the wellness center where we have shared offices was also targeted with a similar scheme. Several years back, there was another flurry of similar attempts to defraud therapists with promises of lare sums of money which would need to be partially refunded. Bottom line, if it sounds too good to be true (multiple sessions paid in advance from someone out of the area) or unusual and the person will not conform to your usual business practices, beware. And report it. It is difficult to trace online crime, but if you save any email correspondence with headers, that can help law enforcement. Thanks!

I was suspicious from the beginning, but was just confirmed that it was a scam when I googled the names and found this on your website.

I had no idea it was not legit so I booked them and asked him to send $550. I received three money orders totaling $2975(from New York, even though the letter was postmarked in London, UK.) We are notifying our local police on how to proceed. My assistant became suspicious and said that this was a scam. They get you to deposit the checks, then cancel and ask for their money back before the deposit cleared.

This email came on January 17th and I have not gotten any response yet to my questions. It is requesting massages for a wife and husbank supposedly in the UK and coming to my area on the 28th of this month. They wanted a local "associate" to get me the money in advance. I have reported it to local news, BBB, and FBI. I really hate to see the scam cause anyother professional and problems. I have been doing massage since 1991. I do a deep relaxation massage in which the muscles relax without pain. I also do energy massage that helps people feel great when I am done. I am also certified to do pregnancy massage. I have lots of happy clients here in italy. I have been looking for a massage therapist for over a week now till i met an old friend yesterday that referred you to me, her name is Serah. She used to live in America before she relocated here with her family, so i decided to contact you to know if you will be able to give my client some massage sessions when she arrives the US. My clients name is Ms Monica Picchi, Shes is a model here in Italy . She will be coming to the U.S in 2 weeks time for a modeling job and will be residing in Illinois temporarily until the neccesary arrangement for her job has been made before she leaves. She will be needing 1hr massage session per day, 2 Sessions per week for 6 weeks when she arrives. Ms Monica asked me to come with her to the US but i told her i would not be able to go with her to the US as i have a course i will be going for in a week time, so i promised to help her find a good massage therapist in your Area. Pls tell me a little more about your self, how long have you been a massage therapist? Would you be able to provide her with the massage sessions from the 25th of this month to the 6th of December, 2 Sessions per week for 6 weeks? Advertising Company Takes Money, Doesn't Deliver 9/21/2009 Alert Regarding Nationwide Advertising (aka Coast to Coast Advertising) Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals (ABMP) members have reported entering into a contract with the company calling itself Nationwide Advertising (aka Coast to Coast Advertising). This company purportedly disappears at times and reappears under a different company name. This company has taken our members’ money but has not provided the advertising that was contracted for. The company sells printed ads on restaurant placemats and phone book covers and appears to have a policy that it will charge yearly for the ads even if a yearly renewal was not agreed upon. In some cases the ads are never printed. We advise ABMP members to check out any complaints that may be on file regarding a company that you are considering for advertising contracts or for other business relationships. Watch your credit card accounts for any unauthorized charges, and take steps to report these unauthorized charges to your credit card company as soon as possible. Go online and Google the company’s name, or contact your local chamber of commerce to research for any reported complaints.
