Course Description: Join us for a fascinating look at the underrated lymphatic system, with special emphasis on its structures and functions. Learn the vital role each of the system’s components plays, including lymphangions, nodes, trunks, ducts, and the glorious cisterna chyli. We’ll also look at various lymphatic-related pathologies, including lymphangitis, lymphoma, cardiovascular and traumatic edema, and lymphedema.

RUTH WERNER

Ruth Werner is an award-winning educator, long-time writer, and retired massage therapist with a passionate interest in massage therapy research and the role of bodywork for people who live with health challenges. Her groundbreaking textbook, A Massage Therapist’s Guide to Pathology was first published in 1998, and is now in its 7th edition, published by Books of Discovery. Ruth is a columnist for Massage and Bodywork magazine and Massage New Zealand. She serves on several national and international volunteer committees, and she teaches continuing education workshops in research, ethics, and pathology all over the world. MEGAN BELANGER

Megan Belanger, LMT, CLT, is the founder of One River Massage Therapy, offering oncology massage, lymphedema and lipedema care, scar rehabilitation, and occupational therapy services in the Boston area. She is the founder of Touch of Kindness, a pay-it-forward fund that helps provide low- and no-cost oncology massage and lymphatic treatment for people with cancer, cancer histories, lymphedema, and lipedema. As a teaching assistant for Tracy Walton & Associates, Megan trained oncology massage therapists and she currently offers mentoring in oncology massage and manual lymphatic drainage. She is the creator of the educational comic strip Under Your Skin and the illustrator of “Understanding Lymphedema: Keeping the Train on Track,” written by Dr. Dhruv Singhal of the Boston Lymphatic Center and sponsored by the Lymphatic Education & Research Network (LE&RN). Ohio Adopts Interstate Massage Compact

The Ohio legislature adopted Senate Bill 56 on June 21, becoming the second state to enact the Interstate Massage Compact. Massage therapists will soon be able to obtain a multistate license that will reduce holdups and delays that often occur when moving to a different state.

US Department of Education 150% Rule Update

A federal judge has granted a preliminary injunction that halts the enforcement of the US Department of Education’s new Bare Minimum Rule, also known as the “100% rule,” until the court takes further action. This is the first step in what could be a lengthy battle to ultimately delay enforcement of the rule, providing schools more time to adjust their programmatic standards, or overturn the rule altogether. Colorado Bill Requires Local Background Checks

Governor Jared Polis signed into law House Bill 24-1371, requiring local government (counties, cities, or municipalities) to conduct periodic criminal background checks for massage establishment operators, owners, and employees.
