Assessment and Methods for the Shoulder Girdle

An exploration of the fascinating (and sometimes frustrating) complexity of the shoulder girdle. After a brief functional anatomy review, learn how to perform fast and highly effective assessment techniques for common shoulder problems.

Enhancing Athletic Performance with Massage

Discover how soft-tissue approaches affect specific muscle function and overall performance. Learn how soft-tissue techniques can affect aspects of athletic performance such as endurance, muscle strength/muscle inhibition, muscle flexibility, muscle activation patterns, proprioception, and balance.

Precision Neuromuscular Therapy 1: Form and Function

In "Form and Function," the first webinar of our five-part series on Precision Neuromuscular Therapy (PNMT), Nelson provides information on the why of treatment therapy and not on the how to treat. Use this foundational knowledge, including assessment, to hone your problem-solving skills, and utilize this deductive approach to bodywork as the platform for the series.

Precision Neuromuscular Therapy 2: Low Back and Thoracic Spine

Learn how to efficiently evaluate and address people with various types of back pain involving the lumbar and thoracic area and review how soft-tissue restrictions are tied to movement and everyday complaints.

Precision Neuromuscular Therapy 3: Upper Extremity

Examine upper extremity conditions including frozen shoulder, rotator-cuff problems, muscle tears, bursitis issues, nerve entrapment, and repetitive-stress injuries of the arm/hand

Precision Neuromuscular Therapy 4: Lower Extremity

Watch as Nelson assesses the muscles of the hip, looking closely at muscular issues as well as the effect of hip pathology on joint function, and addresses conditions such as piriformis syndrome, knee pain, hamstring strains, plantar fascitis, and other common lower extremity pain patterns.

Precision Neuromuscular Therapy 5: Head and Neck

Learn how to efficiently evaluate and address clients with various types of head and neck pain including headaches, whiplash, herniated disks, military neck, reverse curve, and reduced range of motion.

The Big Three: Addressing the Major Muscles Restricting Cervical Rotation

While there are many muscles that have the potential to limit cervical rotation, this presentation focuses on three major muscles that most commonly play the biggest role in limiting the client’s rotation range of motion. You will learn ways to accurately measure cervical rotation restrictions in both the seated and supine positions. After exploring the anatomical and functional aspects of these three muscles, you will explore multiple treatment options with in-depth hands-on demonstration. The goal of this presentation is to present treatment strategies that are most likely to have the greatest effect on the most common cervical complaint.

The Mystery of Pain

Emerging advances in the science of pain are not only fascinating, they open doors to possible avenues of treatment. Douglas Nelson introduces research on pain as presented in his book, The Mystery of Pain. He discusses the definition of pain, the scientific understanding, and the many physical, psychological, and environmental factors that influence its intensity.

Douglas Nelson is a licensed and board-certified massage therapist. The founder of Precision NMT seminars, Nelson has taught hundreds of seminars to various populations, from physician's conferences to educational seminars for laypeople. Practicing massage therapy since 1977, he has studied with a host of great educators and worked in several clinical environments. He is the president of BodyWork Associates, a 16-therapist massage therapy clinic in Champaign, Illinois, which has been in operation since 1982. Nelson still maintains a very active practice, overseeing more than 1,100 client visits annually. The clinic is the laboratory for the development of PNMT. Nelson has treated thousands of clients over the years, from the NBA to the NFL, factory workers, and high-level musicians who suffer musculoskeletal pain. Nelson is passionate about the efficacy of the work and has conducted many clinical research studies to investigate PNMT. He is a member of the International Myopain Association and the International Association for the Study of Pain, and is also a regular columnist for Massage & Bodywork magazine. He is the author of Table Lessons: Insights in the Practice of Massage Therapy and The Mystery of Pain. He also contributed the chapter on fibromyalgia to the book Massage Therapy: Integrating Research and Practice. Visit his website at www.nmtmidwest.com to learn more about his work and trainings.
