Upcoming Online Events for Massage Schools and Students

The new ABMP Friday Forum Series: Online Edition will bring a series of presentations for massage and bodywork schools and students to help deal with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Titled “A Call to Courage in Times of Adversity,” the school presentations will take place on September 25 and October 2, and will feature Certified Dare to Lead™ Facilitator Amy Andrews McMaster.

In Part One on September 25, Amy will apply Brené Brown’s courageous leadership research to manage the ongoing school challenges during COVID-19. Come prepared to recharge with tools to increase resiliency, creativity, and courage through vulnerability among leadership, staff, and students.

In Part Two on October 2, Amy will apply Brené Brown’s courageous leadership research and tools for creating a safe environment by leaning into tough conversations. She’ll share tips and wisdom for choosing courage over comfort when it comes to keeping communication channels open when addressing racial inequality, general staff and student issues, or even COVID-19 protocol concerns.

In addition to the presentation, the instructor events will include online breakout sessions for attendees to connect and discuss the content as well as the issues affecting their schools and students.

The student session, created specifically in response to feedback from a recent survey of massage and bodywork students, will take place on Friday, October 9 and will help students "Embrace the Suck" during the pandemic through a discussion on vulnerability, braving tough times, removing our armor, and finding our call to courage. Ohio Adopts Interstate Massage Compact

The Ohio legislature adopted Senate Bill 56 on June 21, becoming the second state to enact the Interstate Massage Compact. Massage therapists will soon be able to obtain a multistate license that will reduce holdups and delays that often occur when moving to a different state.

US Department of Education 150% Rule Update

A federal judge has granted a preliminary injunction that halts the enforcement of the US Department of Education’s new Bare Minimum Rule, also known as the “100% rule,” until the court takes further action. This is the first step in what could be a lengthy battle to ultimately delay enforcement of the rule, providing schools more time to adjust their programmatic standards, or overturn the rule altogether. Colorado Bill Requires Local Background Checks

Governor Jared Polis signed into law House Bill 24-1371, requiring local government (counties, cities, or municipalities) to conduct periodic criminal background checks for massage establishment operators, owners, and employees.
