Kumiko Kanayama, founder and director of The Five Lights Center of Shiatsu Studies, announced six courses that are now available through the school’s online educational program. All courses are taught through Zoom’s livestream video platform. The new course format meets the demand for distance learning during this time of COVID-19 restrictions.
The course listings include the following titles: Introduction to Shiatsu Workshop; Massage Table Shiatsu; Introduction to the Primary Meridians; The Five Element Theory & Introduction to Water, Wood and Earth Elements; Introduction to Metal and Fire Elements; and Introduction to Shiatsu Treatment Plan. All six courses are approved by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) for massage therapy CEUs and can be studied virtually from anywhere in the world.

- Level 1: Introduction to the Primary Meridian (20 CEU)
- Dates: May 26 & 28; June 9 & 11; and June 16 & 18
- Time: 11AM to 2PM EST
- Cost: $350.00 ($50 discount to LMTs with current massage license)
Wendy S. Bolognesi is the guest instructor. She is also a passionate advocate of Asian bodywork. Wendy began her shiatsu studies at the Ohashi Institute in 1990 and since then, she has been practicing, teaching, and studying all forms of Asian bodywork. She is certified by the Massachusetts Department of Education and teaches at the Bancroft School of Massage Therapy.
Kumiko Kanayama believes that shiatsu is a good fit for a massage therapy practice because shiatsu harnesses the power of touch, elevating it to a new level of sensitivity, enhancing the client’s experience. Also, shiatsu teaches body mechanics that focus on the therapist’s core or hara, allowing practitioners the ability to work longer, not harder. All shiatsu techniques are easily brought to the massage table and can be adapted to almost any professional massage practice.
