Massage Therapists Wanted for Secret Shopper Program

Ben Benjamin, PhD, co-author of The Ethics of Touch, is implementing a National Secret Shopper program for massage therapy businesses to identify the very small percentage of therapists who overstep boundaries and should not be in the profession. The program will also serve to improve practitioners’ skills in the areas of ethics and boundaries as well as improve hands-on skills. The requirements to be considered for a Secret Shopper role include receiving a reimbursed massage two times per month and writing a short report on the experience.

The program is looking for experienced massage therapists who have a passion for advancing the profession in the areas of ethics and boundaries. Over the next year, the program will concentrate on different areas of the United States, beginning with Philadelphia, southern New Jersey, Virginia, Florida, and Houston. New locations will be added as the program expands.

Dr. Benjamin has been in the massage therapy profession for over 55 years and has been writing articles on ethics and boundaries in ABMP’s Massage & Bodywork magazine for many years. If you’d like to know more about him or read his articles, you can find information at benjamininstitute.com, benbenjamin.com, and on massageandbodyworkdigital.com.

If you’re interested in contributing to this effort, please send an email to Dr. Benjamin at DrBen6141@gmail.com to arrange a time to speak with him about the program.

Hello! I am interested about this program! Can I have more information about this? Clients safety is extremely important and I would like to take part in this to help hold people accountable for inappropriate behavior and crossing boundaries. I have been a massage therapist for 9.5 years.

Carmen, thank you for your interest. Please email DrBen6141@gmail.com for more information.

This would be like my dream job right now. I own my own spa back in august I went to Miami on vacation. My last day I was in a horrible car accident a guy ran a red light and flipped the car I was in 3 times. So I'm not working a full schedule now I'm going to have surgery soon and can't work for 3 months. So this be as helpful to me as it is to you . Thanks

Hi there!
I have been a massage therapist since 2010. I am at the point in my career where I am refreshing all my a+p knowledge, and as we all one of the best ways to learn massage is to get massaged! I would love to be apart of this program!
Blessings- jessica

Hello I live in Maryland and I am very interested in becoming a secret shopper in my state. I have been a therapist for 13 yrs, I have also taught massage. Thru my experience of working with and teaching therapists, I know there is a very real need to have oversight to keep Maryland a safe place for massage.
