NCBTMB: Updates to Op System & Board Renewal Requirements

Over the last few years, many Certificants have provided valuable feedback to NCBTMB regarding the Board Certification Renewal process and corresponding Renewal Requirements. The NCBTMB Board and Executive Staff are very grateful to all who have shared their thoughts, ideas, and concerns.

Today, we are writing to make you aware of key updates to the NCBTMB Operating System and Board Renewal Requirements as a direct result of such feedback.

NCBTMB recently released a new Operating System to streamline your member experience. New features include:

  • Single username/password login access to all NCBTMB Account details (i.e. BCTMB & AP)
  • Simplified Renewal Application/Process
  • Personalized, public Directory Listing to promote your practice (optional)

And much more!

In addition, Board Certification Renewal Requirements are as follows (effective immediately):

  • Complete 3 CEs in Ethics from NCBTMB Approved Providers or accredited colleges/universities
  • Complete 21 CEs from NCBTMB Approved Providers or accredited colleges/universities
  • Pass a criminal background check (performed by NCBTMB)

The previous 3 CEs in Research are no longer required. Truthfully, we felt the previous requirement did not adequately address the importance of evidence-based practice and the role research plays within the massage profession. Coupled with the many comments received from Certificants throughout the years, we felt the need to make a change.

Regardless of this change, NCBTMB encourages you, as an Approved Provider, to continue to develop the use of research in your courses and provide peer-reviewed references for your students. In addition, Research courses completed through NCBTMB Approved Providers like you will continue to be accepted toward the 21 CEs required for Board Renewal.

NCBTMB will continue to support and promote research as we team up with the Massage Therapy Foundation to find new and innovative ways to integrate research within the profession, as well as highlight the importance of evidence-based practice. The first of such collaborative efforts begins with our 2019 Webinar Series. Additional details on the NCB/MTF Collaboration will be released later this year.

Thank you for your continued feedback, enthusiasm, and support of NCBTMB!
