We've previously let you know that Delaware House Bill 35 is proposing to mandate massage establishment licensing in the state of Delaware. The bill would require massage businesses to hold a separate massage establishment license in addition to a general business license, and in addition to individual state licensure for the therapists working in the business.

New Jersey Senate Bill 2414 was signed into law on May 1, 2017. Under the new law, people applying for a New Jersey massage therapy license for the first time must have completed 500 hours of massage education and passed a national massage exam. Under the previous law, it was sufficient if license applicants met only one of those two requirements. The new law will not affect people who are currently licensed.

We previously notified you about Indiana House Bill 1289, changing the state's massage therapist regulation system from "title protection" to mandatory licensure. The bill passed in the legislature, and has now been signed into law by the governor. |

Under new clause (54 ½) of section 6 of Chapter 136 of the Massachusetts General Laws, massage therapy services may now be performed by licensed MT"s on Sundays. The prior state law prohibited massage on Sundays.

All Alaska Massage Therapy licenses must be renewed by September 30 of odd-numbered years. That means that you must renew your current massage license by September 30, 2017. License renewal applications will be available on the Board's website sometime after July 1, 2017. |

New CE Requirement
The rules governing continuing education (CE) for licensed massage therapists in Michigan have now been issued. This means that you must complete 18 hours of CE during the license renewal following your next (upcoming) renewal. No CE is required for your next renewal.

The Colorado Department of Regulation (DORA), Office of Massage Therapy Licensure will hold a Stakeholder Meeting on Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at 1:30 pm to discuss proposed Massage Therapy Rules 4, Rule 5 and Rule 13. Per the notice sent out by the state, "stakeholder input is crucial to achieving the Department's missions of consumer protection and effective licensure and enforcement, without unnecessary impediment to the economic market." We encourage you to attend the meeting if you're interested in the rulemaking process and would like to be heard.

An amendment was added to Senate Bill 9 in the Illinois Legislature last week which would impose a sales tax on massage therapy services. The bill includes a new list of taxable "personal care services," including massage, manicuring, tattooing, and tanning. However, "personal care services" are excluded from the tax if they are performed by, or under the order of, a licensed physician, physician's assistant, nurse, or a licensed chiropractor. Hair cutting, coloring, and styling are also exempt.
